Dr. Curt Storlazzi is a research geologist in the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program. He earned a B.Sc. from the University of Delaware in geology and a Ph.D. in coastal geology and oceanography from the University of California. He joined the USGS in 2002 and presently leads a team examining the geologic and oceanographic processes that affect the growth and vitality of coral reefs, the hazard risk reduction they provide adjacent coastal communities and infrastructure, and how sea-level rise will increase flooding hazards to, and reduce the resiliency of, coral reef-lined coasts and their associated communities.
Dr. Storlazzi has published over 200 journal articles and reports that have been cited over 11,000 times. His research has been cited in the 2018 and 2023 National Defense Authorization Acts, a 2019 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, 3 state and 5 territorial laws, and recognized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and International Guidelines on Natural and Nature-based Features for Flood Risk Management. He has received the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force’s Scientific Achievement Award for unwavering dedication to the advancement of science, a U.S. Department of the Interior Excellence of Service Award for exceptional work on the U.S. 5th National Climate Assessment, and he was granted the highest honor of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Distinguished Service Award, for outstanding scientific contributions in the public service.
Dr. Storlazzi led the development of sections on coastal ecosystems in hazard and risk reduction for the United Nations’ 3rd World Ocean Assessment and the U.S. Coastal Research Program’s Human and Ecosystem Health in Coastal Systems report. He was invited to give presentations on the role of coastal ecosystems in risk reduction for the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s “Nature-based Solutions to Address Flooding in Coastal Cities”; U.S. National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s “National Practice Forum on Nature-Based Solutions”; and the U.S. Board on Coastal Engineering Research’s (BCER) “Setting the Stage for the BCER’s Future and the next 100 meetings”.
